Hypertensive encephalopathy denotes an acute disorder which affects the central nervous system. It is produced by malignant hypertension. The symptoms can range from headaches to a coma. Adequate control of the blood pressure will often lead to reversal of all of the symptoms. However, when the condition persists or recurs, some permanent damage to the brain may occur.

The cause of this form of encephalopathy is severe hypertension with secondary effects on the brain.

Symptoms of hypertensive encephalopathy include headaches, nausea, and vomiting. As the process progress there may be confusion, stupor, and coma.
