Post axillary dissection pain syndrome occurs in people who have recently undergone breast surgery. Pain and numbness develops in the region around the armpit. Although this disorder most commonly occurs within 6 weeks of surgery, there are cases described that begin many months following surgery.

Post axillary dissection pain is caused by injury to the intercosto-brachial nerve. This may occur during surgical dissection of the axilla.

Signs and Symptoms of Post Axillary Dissection Syndrome

The symptoms of this disorder include burning, aching pain in the armpit. Pain may also be felt in the shoulder blades and inner part of the upper arm. There is numbness and tingling that occurs in a similar anatomical distribution.
