Prior to forming cervical cancer, the cells of the cervix may develop an abnormality referred to as dysplasia. This is a mild or severe form of abnormal cellular growth. This abnormal growth is viewed as a precancerous condition and does not represent cancer of the cervix. The diagnosis may be medically classified by the extent and of the abnormal growth. This information, together with the degree of dysplasia, may be helpful in planning the appropriate treatment. It occurs most often in those age 25 to 35.

Causes of Cervical Dysplasia

The cause is unknown. Exposure to sexually transmitted viral infections, such as genital warts or herpes infections, may increase the risk of developing this disorder. Multiple sexual partners and having begun sexual intercourse at a very young age can all be risk factors.

Signs and Symptoms of Cervical Dysplasia

Usually no there are no symptoms and diagnosis is made with a routine Pap smear evaluation.
