Priapism is a painful and persistent erection of the penis. It occurs without sexual arousal or desire. It is a rare, but serious condition. It requires immediate attention so that a permanent injury does not occur and impair the person's ability to have a normal erection.

Priapism occurs when blood cannot drain from the erect penis. There are a number of conditions that can produce this disorder. They include damage to the nerves that supply the blood vessels of the penis. Sickle cell disease, leukemia and polycthemia, all blood disorders, can lead to the development of priapism. Some antipsychotic drugs can produce this abnormality. Drugs such as viagra seldomly lead to this condition. It can also be seen with spinal cord injuries.

The symptom produced with priapism is a prolonged, painful, and tender erection. It is unaccompanied by sexual arousal.
