Trench mouth is also known as necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis or Vincent's infection. It is a severe form of gingivitis that produces pain. Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gums. This disorder is not contagious. Without treatment, trench mouth can spread to other areas. It is most common when poor dental hygiene and poor nutrition is present.

Poor hygiene and poor nutrition tend to cause this disorder. It is due to the abnormal growth of bacteria that normally exist harmlessly in the crevices of the gums.

Signs and Symptoms of Trench Mouth

The slightest pressure on the gums will produce bleeding. There are painful gums, excess salivation, bad breath, and ulcers covered with gray membrane on the gums. Difficulty swallowing and difficulty speaking may occur.
