An abnormal group of blood vessels within the central nervous system. This abnormality occurs during the development of the brain and spinal cord. The blood vessels are not only located in an abnormal place, but they are usually weaker than normal. These blood vessels will occasionally break and cause bleeding within the brain. In addition, since blood is rapidly transported from the arteries to the veins, the brain tissue in this area may not receive its normal blood supply. Sometimes, this lack of adequate blood flow can lead to seizures.
Causes of Arteriovenous Malformation (avm)
It is unknown why arteriovenous abnormalities occur. They are sometimes seen in syndromes in which similar vascular changes occur in the eye or other locations. They occur during the developmental phase of the brain and spinal cord.
Signs and Symptoms of Arteriovenous Malformation (avm)
Headaches which tend to occur in the same location are sometimes associated with arteriovenous malformations. If the blood vessels break, the surrounding brain may be injured, leading to paralysis, speech problems, coma or death. Over long periods of time the ischemia, or inadequate blood supply to the tissues immediately around the AVM, may produce dysfunction of the brain. This may become manifested as a seizure disorder.
