Infectious esophagitis produces chest and abdominal discomfort. There may be painful or difficult swallowing. Bleeding may occur. The disease is usually associated with disorders that adversely impact the immune system. These may include cancer and AIDS. Diabetics are at increased risk as are elderly people, particularly those who are poorly nourished. The chronic use of antibiotics or steroids are risk factors.

Infectious esophagitis is a disorder that commonly occurs in patients whose immune system has been diminished or in those suffering from AIDS. Malnutrition, use of steroids, and broad spectrum antibiotic use are all causes of the disorder. Diabetics and transplant patients are all at increased risk. The infections which tend to occur include fungal infections, Herpes simplex infections and cytomegalo virus.

Signs and Symptoms of Infectious Esophagitis

Infectious esophagitis typically produces intermittent or constant pain in the upper abdomen or lower chest. The pain may radiate to the neck. The pain is aggravated with eating and swallowing. Some people will have fever. Vomiting blood or black, tarry stools may develop if the esophagitis leads to bleeding.
