Black hairy tongue is caused when the filiform papillae elongate and fail to desquamate, or fall off. It is caused by antibiotics, heavy smoking and antiseptic mouth washes. The majority of cases have no known cause.

Signs and Symptoms of Black Hairy Tongue

Black hairy tongue produces brownish or black areas of discoloration of the tongue. It appears as if there is hair on the tongue. It is more common in the middle of the tongue.
