Chondrosarcoma accounts for about one fourth of all sarcomas of the bones. They occur primarily in adults, most commonly between 40 and 60 years of age. It is most common in the shoulder and pelvis. When particularly malignant forms of these tumors occur, they often spread to the lungs.

Causes of Chondrosarcoma

Chondrosarcomas may arise from malignant changes within cartilage cells or may occur through the mutation of other types of cells.

Signs and Symptoms of Chondrosarcoma

Chondrosarcomas usually occur with pain and swelling over the involved bones. They most commonly involve the bones of the shoulder and pelvis, although the shafts of longer bones may be involved. There is usually a progressive enlargement of the lump or mass. If the tumor has spread to the lungs, there may be a cough and some shortness of breath, or the person may cough up blood.
