Delerium describes a specific type of confusional state. It is varcharacterized by disorders of perception, with vivid hallucinations and dreams. There are emotional disturbances and problems with sleep. Delerium is also varcharacterized by marked overactivity of the autonomic nervous system and psychomotor activities. Delerium is a sudden, usually limited disorder which is completely reversible. The most common state which precipitates delerium is in the alcoholic patient.
Causes of Delerium
Delerium is seen in the alcoholic patient, especially during alcohol withdrawal. Other drugs and psychiatric illnesses may produce states of delerium.
Signs and Symptoms of Delerium
The symptoms of delerium included hallucinations and delusions. There is difficulty with falling to sleep and vivid dreams may be present. Most people suffering from delerium have a heightened alertness. Their response to visual, auditory, or sensory stimulation is greatly magnified. They tend to sweat, tremble, and they appear intensely agitated.
