Diabetic ketoacidosis can occur with type 1 diabetes. In this form of diabetes, the pancreas produces too little insulin or no insulin at all. Diabetic ketoacidosis occurs when the body tissues cannot take up glucose. Therefore, the cells use fats for energy production. Toxic chemicals called ketones accumulate in the blood. In type 1 diabetics, people who miss taking their insulin may be subject to the same disorder.
