Retinoblastoma is a rare cancer that involves the light sensitive lining of the eye. It usually occurs in young children and about 20% of the time occurs in both eyes. About half of all cases are transmitted through an abnormal gene.

Causes of Retinoblastoma

About half of the cases of retinoblastoma occur secondary to a genetic defect passed along on chromosome 13. The remaining cases have no known cause.

Signs and Symptoms of Retinoblastoma

The most common symptom is the development of a whitened area behind the pupil. As vision becomes impaired, it is not uncommon for the eyes to appear to look in slightly different directions. As the disease progresses, it may spread to other body parts leading to poor generalized health and weight loss.
