Branchial Cleft Cyst

Overview of Branchial Cleft Cyst

overview

The branchial clefts are rudimentary openings that exist during development of the fetus. The first banchial cleft remnant gives rise to the ski openings that occur between the external auditory canal and the jaw. The second branchial cleft remnant produces skin openings along the front of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. These congenital abnormalities may accumulate fluid, forming an expanding cyst, or become infected.

Causes of Branchial Cleft Cyst

causes

Failure of the branchial clefts to normally develop.

Signs and Symptoms of Branchial Cleft Cyst

signs and symptoms

Drainage of fluid from the skin opening may occur if an infection develops. The skin may become red, hot and swollen. A collection of fluid may develop leading to a lump in the neck in the same area of the branchial cleft. These are soft and non-tender. If they become infected, they will become painful, red and hot and may spontaneously drain pus. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck may develop.
