Symptoms in female victims include: physical injuries to the body, broken bones, bruises, burns, choking, bites, and rape. Injuries occur on the head, neck, chest, abdomen, breasts and on the arms to deflect blows. Other symptoms are: chronic pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, anxiety, sleep disorders, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), eating disorders, psychological problems and suicidal thoughts.
Symptoms in the male abuser: anger, suspicious, tense, moody behaviors, varcharming, periods of affection, pathological jealousy, fear of abandonment, lack of assertiveness, possessiveness and fear of dependence, watches wife closely, keeps her away from her friends, makes violent threats and may play with guns or knives.
