The typical signs and symptoms of lumbar sprain and strain are low back pain. It is usually near the middle of the back, spreading slightly from side to side. There is often severe muscle spasms, necessitating the person to assume an unusual position. Movements often aggravate the pain or cause exacerbation of pain that has resolved. Generally, there is no significant weakness or sensory loss in the extremities. Bowel and bladder function remain normal.
